I made a billboard for the 1970 film The Conformist, using some experimental installation and photography techniques.
In preparing my elements for photographing, I first did a drawing in Illustrator of the main character, Marcello, and cut the silhouettes of many men out of a sheet of bristol board.
Once in the photo studio, I used a projector to display my drawing and a spot light to shine onto the figures and cast a shadow. It wasn’t until I had spent a fair amount of time configuring and reconfiguring the space that I came upon my final set up: projecting Marcello onto a translucent and textured sheet of plastic and covering part of the spotlight so that it only shone onto one single silhouette.
My design shows a likeness of the main character, Marcello, while also speaking to the idea of his resistance to conformity. Although when in a crowd his figure appears similar to those around him, the spotlight illuminating him symbolizes that he is different from the others.
