This is an alarm clock that I designed for Jay Gatsby from one of my favorite books, "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

I started with a mood board so I could understand not only Gatsby's character, but also his lifestyle. From my character observations re-reading the book, I then created a storyboard that tells of a hypothetical moment in Gatsby's life that defines his character.

I realized through my character research that Gatbsy is gilded, appearing exuberant on the outside, but rotting on the inside. I created sketch models around this idea

I used the word "gilded" as an aesthetic that I adhered to, in addition to the general aesthetic of the Roaring 20's

I hypothesized how one might manufacture my clock, if it were to be made.

Below are pictures of my final appearance model

When the alarm goes off at the desired time, the clock face spins until a cameo of Daisy (his ex-lover) faces forward. In order for the alarm to turn off, Gatsby would have to physically push it back to the original clock face. This action forces Gatsby to turn Daisy away from him and move on- something that the character could never actually do.
