High School Design & Digital Arts Teacher
Part of my teaching philosophy is to make art and design accessible to all students, regardless of their interest and ability. In my classes I usually get a large range of student interest and talents. It is imperative to my job that I am able to engage all of them in the same lesson.
With all of this in mind, my grading structure is set up to allow kids to succeed if they are willing to try new things (even if they aren't good at them), put in effort and maintain good class participation. So far, I have found this to have a measurable success. Many of my students are what we might consider unexpected artists: children who took the class just to get an arts credit but become interested enough in the course material that they take another one of my classes to keep learning. By employing a healthy sense of humor and assigning trendy projects (such as to design a Snapchat Geofilter), I am able to make connections with students who normally stray from the arts altogether.
